Meet Our Friend Katie Zaferes
Note: After this was originally posted, Katie married Tommy Zaferes. Many years ago in the town of Hampstead, Maryland…wait. Scratch that. Start over. Not that many years ago, in the town of Hampstead, a child was born into the house of Hursey. She was a precocious child. A mischievous child. And strong of will. In fact, some might even say…stubborn. But…she was talented. And best of all, she was pure of heart.
As she grew, it became clear that her talent new few bounds. She could run like gazelle. Swim like a dolphin. And bike like the wind. Bike like the wind? Ok, we know we should have stayed with the animal theme for the bike but what animal rides a bike? I mean occasionally you’ll see a chipmunk or something on YouTube but seriously, that would just ruin the image. Anyway, we digress. She was an amazing biker.
And now, ladies and gentlemen, she is part of the Coeur family.
It is our distinct pleasure and high honor to introduce you to rising ITU star Katie Hursey!
After graduating from Syracuse in 2012 where she ran track and steeplechase, Katie decided to give triathlon a shot. Only six months after graduation, she was spotted by the head of the Under 23 Olympic Development team and invited to live at the Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs.
It became clear that the folks in Colorado had made a good decision when on July 14 of 2013, Katie won the ITU World Cup in Palamós, Spain. She followed that up with a win on August 11th at the ITU World Cup sprint race in Tiszaujvaros, Hungary where she beat Olympian Aileen Reid of Ireland by almost 30 seconds. The victories kept coming with a win at Rev 3 Maine and despite a biking accident in September, she pulled out a victory at the San Diego Super Sprint.
We’re thrilled to have Katie represent Coeur. She combines athletic excellence with humility, compassion and a great sense of humor.
